The phrase, "maa Guru guha swamiki ne dasudaithi," in the samashTi caraNam indicates that the composer is really Ponnaiah PiLlai, a descendant of the ThanjAvUr Quartet whose guru was Muttuswami Dikshithar who used the mudra "guru guha". The words "guruguha swami" refers to Muttuswami Dikshithar. Since his forefathers were "dAsAs" of MD the composer also considers himself a dAsan of MD.
