Translation:
(Note: There is no accurate English
equivalent of the word Madi (मडि ). I have loosely
translated it as “Purity” or “Cleanness”. The original word itself may be used,
if preferred, in translation also.)
Why do you keep jumping about shouting
“I am clean”, “I am pure”
The way to be pure is different. |Pallavi|
It is purity when you ceaselessly meditate upon
the feet of the Protector of the world |Anupallavi|
It is not purity if you merely soak the
cloth, dry it and wear it.
It is purity when you get rid of the
lust, the anger, the arrogance and the jealousy that are within you.
Is it purity if you do not worship the
son of Vasudeva on holy days such as Dashami and Dvaadashi, and eat other
peoples food disregarding the evilness and get trapped in Yama’s noose?
When hungry and tired Brahmins come to
your house at noon time, if you eat your fill saying ‘There is nothing for the
devil’, it is impurity.
Is it purity if you just clean this body
of yours full of urine and waste? You become pure if you constantly remember
the name of Achyuta Ananta (the imperishable and eternal Vishnu) and get rid of
the collection (of sins).
It is purity if you touch with devotion
the feet of the elders, the teachers, and the devotees (literally, the slaves)
of Sri Hari and beseech Purandara Vithala, night and day, to look after you.
