When sorrow strikes , won’t you take the harp,
And add sweetness to my life-Won’t you,
Add sweetness to me –Won’t you ,
Remove the pain in my heart bereft of love ,
By singing in Tamil, Darling,
Won’t you remove the pain.

In this world surrounded by meddling and simplicity,
For adding feelings to this life –for,

When we did not know the stanza,
From the thirukkural of the divine poet,
“Good conduct is the base of goodness-and bad conduct,
Would always result in bad things,”
Would you not tell me one word,
From the thirukkural of the divine poet, won’t you,
Dance the steps of ancient tamil dance-darling
Won’t you dance .

Mentioning what is bad and what is good ,
From the Tamil book found by great poets,
Won’t you tell me one word,
From the thirukkral of the divine poet
Won’t you tell me one word ,
And show your capability and become ,
Wealth to this soul that begot you ,
Won’t you become the Tamil wealth-Oh darling.
So pretty ful!!
ReplyDeleteI listened to the version sung by OS Arun, may I ask about some small differences between the pronunciation?
For example, in the Pallavi, alla threeka maataaya. But he sings allalerka maataya. Is it because one needs to sing the words that way?
It is "Allal" meaning "pain". He has sung it wrongly.
DeleteThere are different versions I suppose... so allal means difficulty and theerka is to resolve | neeka is to remove (which is the version I have listened to in Bombay Jayashree and the old movie version) | erka is to take on or accept perhaps implying wont you share the pain?. I prefer neeka/theerka.
DeleteWe are blessed with you and because of you I have been having the meaning of Tamil and sanskrit lyrics meaning.simply saying thanks is not enough..thanks a lot..🙏🙏
ReplyDeleteListen too Sanjay's you will love it with clear pronounciapro

ReplyDeleteLyrics and meanings apart, the song is set to music in a beffiting raaga...Desh. Bharathidasan's feelings pour out when musicians sing this song in Desh raaga.
ReplyDeleteAllal means sorrow
ReplyDeleteTheerkuka- is to end.
So the words are allal theerkamattaya
Won't you end my sorrows
Listen to Sanjay Subramanian. It is utter clarity with feeling and the latter part Desh Ragam rendered is close to perfect.
ReplyDeleteThis is why classical music will never be outdone. The song is already so beautiful, but after reading and understanding the lyrics, it's as if a secret level is unlocked in enjoying the song! My preferred version is the one by Sanjay Subramaniam. Worth a listen!
