Humble  centenary  tribute To Sri Puthucode Krishnamurthy

This is the centenary  year  of birth of the musician  and composer Sri Puducode  Krishnamurthy. He belongs  the north village of Puthucode  , which is also my place and he is the son of  Puthucode  Krishna Sastri  and Parvathi Ammal.

 He started learning Music from his mother Smt.Parvathy, then continued advanced training under Palakkad Rama Bhagavatar. In 1958' He has been appointed as a faculty in Swathy Tirunal College of Music, Trivandrum. In 1976' he became the Principal of Chembai memorial college of Music in Palakkad. After retirement, he joined in Chennai Kalakshethra, he worked with Vidwan M.D.Ramanathan. they were close friends. Puthucode sir spent his last days in Karamanai, Trivandrum. He passed away on August 23rd, Friday on the day of Varalakshmi Vratham, after chanting the Devee Maahaathmyam, 11th Chapter, by doing the dhoopa aarathy.... He has composed many compositions, Varnams, Ragamalikas, Pancharatnams, Ramayanam, Dashaavathara Kritis.

 From his daughter  Smt Uma Parvathy , I got his written  manuscript  of several compositions. Among them is the moost important is the  “devi  Pancharathnam”,All the five songs areabout the Goddess.Each  is composed in a different Raga. Each song has four divitions, Pallavi, anupallavi , Charanam and SWara Sahithyams.Swara Sahithyam contained  seven separate lines with a line  of sahithya  embedded  in a series  of swaras

I have only typed in english, thefive songs  .I have  avoided  typing out the swaras.

My humble pranams to a great star  of music from my own village  , during the centenary  Year.

She who wanders  in peaks  of golden mountain

Oh goddess  of heart of  Kameswara (Oh mother)

Suvasini, suhasini , bhavani

 

Oh goddess  with good smell, who laughs  well, Oh Bhavani

 

SWara Sahithyam

 

1.Sarasa  dalayutha lochini, dasa jana palini, manonmani

 

She who eyes like lotus petals, she who loks after  devotees, She who is  gem of the mind

 

2.Dhanavakula soodhani, madhu soodana sodhari, karunaa saagari, suvasini

 

She who killed  asuras, sister of killer  of Madhu, she who is  ocean of mercy, she who smells sweet

 

3.Bhava raga laya,  sugandha vasitha, gana mala charthidaan mathi tharika suvasini

 

For making you wear  the sweet smelling garland  of music

 which has  sweet smell of emotion , tune and proper  merger

Oh sweet smelling one  , give me  consent

 

4.nin mahima aayiram  rasanakalaal ananthanum avarnaneeyam

Simha vahana  roodyai, maahishaadhi daithya badha  theertha  durge

 

Even Adhisesha with his thousand  toungues  cannot describe your greatness

Oh Durga  who riding on a lion , put an end to troubles created  by Mahisha  and other asuras

 

5.Thonneedenam amba nin padha bhaja nama tharil atheeva mudhonnalathe smrithiyodu

Kamithartha dhana nirathayaam vara kanchi kamakoti peeda  vasini

SAma veda  saaramaaya gana kalaa dhara pranava  nadha roopini, suvasini

 

Oh Mother I should get lot of interest in names praying your feet along with Vedas

Oh Goddess  who lives  in blessed Kanchi Kama Koti peda and who is interested in granting all  the desires

Oh Goddess  who has form of art of music which is essence of Sama veda and who has form of sound of Om and is sweet  smelling

 

6Vaniyum viswanadha nin mahima veena meetti ganam cheithidave,

Pulakangithayai , pathiyin vaibhavam ketta anumodhana  mozhi  arulidave

AA mozhi madhurimayil saradhayum leenayai swayam lajjithayai

Veenaa vadhanam mathiyaakkidaan idayaakkiya , sudha  madhura  bashini  suvasini

 

 When goddess  saraswathi strummed  her veena and started  singing the greatness  of Lord shiva

You became ecstatic  hearing  the greatness  of your husband and  told her positive comments

And in the sweetness  of that reply, Goddess  saraswathi became interested  and felt  ashamed

And stopped  playing her Veena and oh sweet smelling goddess  with nectar like voice who was the reason for it

 

7.Manthra, thanthra yanthra  yogaadhiyaam, sakthyopasana  marga niratharaam

Kuumbhajaadhi muni manasa sadhane, Dumburu narada sidha  gandharwa,

Yaksha kinnaraadhikalum manavarum  aadi paadi paniyum paripavane,

Chakra raja Madhya virajamaana Lalithe  Rajarajeswari , suvasini

 

She who is busy  with manthra, thanthra , yanthra , yoga etc

She who lives in minds of sages  like Agasthya, She who is divine pure,

And sung, danced  and saluted by  Dumburu , Sage Narada, Sidhas ,

Gandharwas kinnaras  and human beings, She who is Lalitha

Who shines  in middle   of the king  of Chakras, Who is  Rajarajeswari who is sweet  smelling

 

Shubham

 

Saranagatha  jana Palini, harinanga  sama  sundara  vadhani

Giri nayaka  nandhini, viravil, karuna  kadaksham arulvai  adiyanil

 

Oh goddess  who looks after  people  who surrender to her, She who has face as pretty as limbs of deer

The daughter of king of mountains, Please give a merciful  corner eyes  look at me.

She who  takes various types  of form as per  the need of the time,

For removing the problems and has good history with singing of devas

Kama dahana  dureenaayaam  ,Karmukhil varna suveni

 

She who walks  similar  to  elephant, who has face like pretty moon light

She who was  interested  in Burning of Manmatha, she who has  colour of black cloud, , she who is sweet smelling

Thara thamya milla vara Parameshya kamkshikalaam

Thapasa AAardhitha devi , parasakthi viravil kanivodu

 

Mother of elehant faced god and six faced god, You are lotus eyed,

She who is worshipped by  sages who are incomparable  seekers of the Parameshwari

Oh divine  power  with speed with a light heart

Sundara  saudhangalilum, parna salakalilum.bedham ethum menye

Rasmikal vitharu ,athu poal  bhavathiyude madiyathil,

Cholayilum  , kadavinilum ,bedha methumenye

Athu poal adiyanum dhanyanaayidaan , bhavathiyum mathi,

 

In the forest  , in the city

In pretty mansions, in hermitage, without  feeling any difference

Spray  your rays, and similarly in the lap of yourself

In the garden, in bathing ghats without feeling any difference

Oh Goddess  you are  sufficient to make  me blessed  like  that.

 

7.Vasinyaadhi vagdevikal, anisam sthuthi padidave

Animadhi ashta  sidhikal, adi vanangi ninnidave

Viswothpathi  sthithi laya kariniyai sahasra dala

Saraseeruhamathil pathi yodu vilangidum  visalakshi

 

With the goddess for speechi who attract  singing your prayers

With eight occult powers  like Anima  saluting your feet and standing

You , the reason for creation, upkeep  and destruction of universe, on

The  lotus with thousand petals, Oh Visalakshi  you shine  along with your husband.

 

Iru panineer malarkal swayam charikkum pratheethi  thonnum

Charana peru villoliyodu arukil vannu vivasan yennil (kanivodu)

 

Very much  looking like  two fully opened  rose flowers moving

And  with great light  of your feet, come  near to this tired one(with light heart)

Please bless me to think of your feet worshipped   by Lopamudhra the wife of agasthya
