VaraLakshmi Vrutha song
VaraLakshmi Vrutha song
Translated by
P.R.Ramachander
1.Varalakshmi ammanudaya mahimaigal athanayum,
Magizhndu pada-singara ganapathiye, jayamaga yendanukku,
Thadangamal Saraswathi sahayam vendum.
Jaya mangala , nithya Shubha Mangala.
To sing with joy all the greatness of Goddess Varalakshmi,
And achieve it without failure , I need your help , Oh handsome Ganapathi,
And also the help of Goddess Saraswathi for completing it without problems,
Victory to Mangala , the Mangala who is ever auspicious.
2.Kailsam thannile kakshiyudan irundhar karuna Kadakshi , parameswarane,
Avarudaya paadathai aanandamagave anbudane Parvathiyum adi paninthal.
Jaya mangala , nithya Shubha Mangala.
On the Kailsas mountain, God Parameswara with a merciful look sat regally,
And Goddess Parvathi with happiness and love saluted his holy feet,
Victory to Mangala , the Mangala who is ever auspicious.
3.Chokkanare, Ishwarre, Shubha keerthi ullavare,
Kali thanile karpitha vruthangal thanile yenda vrutham,
Adisayam yethunnu niyamichu yendanukku chollumayya ishtamaga.
Jaya mangala , nithya Shubha Mangala.
Bewitching Lord , Oh God who has auspicious fame,
Among the penances that have been prescribed for the Kali age,
Which is the most wonderful, please judge and be pleased to tell me.
Victory to Mangala , the Mangala who is ever auspicious.
4.Kudilam yendra pattinathil Charumathi yendra vanitha rathinam,
Vasithu vandal, aval magimayai yaar ariya koodum.
Arundathi guna Sali amman avale
Jaya mangala , nithya Shubha Mangala.
A diamond among ladies called Charumathi used to live in the town of Kudilam,
And who can tell her greatness as she was personification of Arundathi herself
Victory to Mangala , the Mangala who is ever auspicious.
5.Umayavale kelippo, ava kadhayai chollugiren,
Daraniyile sakalamana vruthangal undu,
Aanalum aval cheytha vara Lakshmi vrutham,
Adisayam , anaivarum agamara cheyya vendum.
Jaya mangala , nithya Shubha Mangala.
Hear Oh Parvathi, I will you her story.
In the world there are several penances ,
But the Vara Lakshmi penance that she undertook,
Was great and all people should surely observe it,
Victory to Mangala , the Mangala who is ever auspicious.
6.Avalukku idhai thiru vaakaal karpithal kalyani vara Lakshmi,
Nidhi pol puruvamum vizhiyin azhagum ,
Chandhiran pol nirpale , ninaitha per kangal munne,
Jaya mangala , nithya Shubha Mangala.
This was taught to her by the giver auspiciousness Varalakshmi
Who has treasure like eyelids , with very pretty eyes ,
And she will stand like moon in front of those who meditate on her.
Victory to Mangala , the Mangala who is ever auspicious.
7.Sravana maathathil Sukra varam thannile suchigaludane andha poojai cheythal,
Ishta varam koduppal, kashtamellam pokkiduval, Karuna kadakshi avale.
Jaya mangala , nithya Shubha Mangala.
If that penance is observed with purity on the Friday of the Sravana moth,
That Goddess with merciful look would give desired boons and remove all sufferings.
Victory to Mangala , the Mangala who is ever auspicious.
8.Mamiyar , Mamanar, Matha , Pitha kkalukku guru poojai panniyavarkku oru kurayumillai,
Bharthavin poojayil pazhuthondrumillai yendru Parvathi Soppanathil vandhu sonnal,
Jaya mangala , nithya Shubha Mangala.
“To those who do worship of Mother in law, Father in law and parents, there are no problems,
And in the worship of Husband there is nothing wrong” told Parvathi in her dream.
Victory to Mangala , the Mangala who is ever auspicious.
9.Chollave melliyargal kan munne maraindhu irundhal,
Chonna Nal vaaku ithuvendru chonnale,
Charumathi shubha kadhayai, nadellam kondada vendum yendru.
Jaya mangala , nithya Shubha Mangala.
“She was hidden from my sight but these blessed words were told by her,”
Told Charumathi about this good event so that all the world celebrates it.
Victory to Mangala , the Mangala who is ever auspicious.

(A story made up of songs)
By
Neelakanta Sivan
Translated by
P.R.Ramachander
(Sage Neelakanta Sivan was a great composer belonging to South Travancore and lived at the end of 19th centuary. Though a very great composer of Carnatic music Krithis, very many people do not knbow about him. His Disciple Papanasam Sivan is however well known. http://www.carnaticcorner.com/articles/nilakanta_sivan.html as well as http://www.carnatica.net/neelakantasivan.htm give a very detailed account of this composer and his Krithis. Though he is said have composed over 2000 Krithis very few of them are now available. I stumbled on this musico story of Savithri and Sathyavan composed by him in a very old book published by Giri Traders , Madras(1988). He has profusely used Viruthams in this book “A viruttam usually precedes rendition of a song. In most cases, it is sung in the same ragam as the song that follows it. Occasionally, viruttam of multiple verses are sung in different ragams, followed by a song in the same ragam as the last sung ragam of the viruttam.”)
