Introduction to Sanskrit Krithis

Introduction to Sanskrit Krithis

By

P.R.Ramachander

The Carnatic music is the Indian classical music of the South Indian states. In the initial stages the Sanskrit Sthothras were sung in the classical music Raga. Slowly compositions to suit the Raga were being written. The first voluminous contribution to this end was by Sage Purandara Dasa in Kannada. He too wrote a few Krithius in Sanskrit. There was a great contribution of Tamil lyrics immediately afterwards . The next great contribution towards this was by the musical trinity of Thiruvayaru. Of the trinity while Thygaraja mostly wrote in Telugu, Muthu Swami Deekshithar and Shyama Shasrigal wrote mainly in Sanskrit. After this all these languages became popular for writing lyrics.

And return within no time.

3. There is always fear of robbers in the shores of Yamuna,
And Oh darling, you will get afraid, if they come and beat you.

4. Are there thieves for thieves, have you seen mummy,
If the robber comes and beats me, I will make them in to pieces.

5. In the Govardhana Mountain, there are fierce animals,
And oh darling, if lion, tiger and bear come, you will be afraid.

6. All wild animals would come running, when they see me,
And when they come as a crowd, I would hunt and win over them.

7. When the loving Nanda gopa asks me where the child is,
What shall I reply him and he would search for you with anguish.

8. I would be playing ball in the streets with boys,
And when you call me darling,
I would run and come back.

Introduction to Malayalam Krithis

Though there are great exponents of Carnatic music in Kerala, very few of them composed music in Malayalam. The greatest composer of Kerala was of course Maha Raja Swathi Thiru Naal. He also devoted his attention in composing songs in Sanskrit, Tamil, Telugu and even Hindi. There are very few songs written in Malayalam by him, The greatest Malayalam composer was Irayamman Thampi. His writings were popularized by Chembai Vaidyanatha Bhagavathar and Sri Jesu das.

Charanam

The time when we saluted those who took alms from us has gone,
The time when we serve people who made fun of us has gone.

Now it is sure that every one is equal,
Let us herald the victory by conch,
And tell the entire world about this.

The time when lie and deceit is not there has come,
The time when good people are great people has come,
And the time for destruction of great deceivers has come.

4. We would salute farming and labour- we would,
Berate those who spend time by doing nothing,
We would not die by irrigating our fields,
We would not work and get tired by working for snobs.

5. We understand that the land we stay is ours,
WE understood that we only have rights here,
We would not become slaves to any one in the world,
But we would live as slaves to the fully complete God.

Pallavi

Go away silently, you tell that my son,
Has done mischief in your homes and,
You are waving and waving your hands,
You do not have any work, go away silently.

Anupallavi

My son who is very pretty and of the blue lotus colour,
Has never gone away from me even for an instant since morning,
You have come and told me with description and action,
For your gossiping was my son the only victim,
You do not have any work, go away silently

Charanam

1. This lady is of a very shy type,
And thought that the king’s house was hers,
And wandered here and there inside,
And she told with simile that he kissed her,
And told it to the entire town and says, she is shy.

2.Telling that she physically caught and brought him,
This mischievous one talked clearly,
I really caught him , she told with her eyes showing emotion,
And she was blinking because she had tied her fearsome son.

3.If a child cries , you tell Krishna pinched him,
If an Uri falls , you tell Krishna threw it down,
If butter is not visible , you say Krishna robed it,
Is there no limit to your imaginative lies,
Did you not get any one else to blame?

English Translation

Pallavi

No, no, Mummy,
All that these people have told is a lie.

Anupallavi

They said that there was trouble for them but,
All of them are lying with courage, but any way listen,
Please enquire with my friends, who stood there,
And if found true, give me all punishments that you want

Charanam

1. They told they felt shy to tell before four people,
But those girls have told it now before a crowd,
They told that I kissed them in the mouth like a husband,
Please tell mother whether I know about this rule,
And Oh mother do not believe them just like that.

2. Would there be butter to apply in the mouth of guests,
Would the guests sleep till butter is applied,
Would the ghee drop from the moth during day time,
Should you believe in these words?

3.Please ask the girl who forgot herself ,
For obscure mercy I brought her here on that day
Today though she tells here forgetting that,
Why she did not bring the girl with her. Ask?

4.They told that I have pinched a baby,
If you want please examine my hands,
None of my fingers have nails,
If you believe it is true, there is nothing there mummy

5.Seeing that nobody is there in that person’s house,
And hearing the sound “Amme, Amme” and seeing,
That little calf was having trouble to feed,
I gave milk to that calf, Please do not believe their story.

6.If we keep the butter in our mouth, would be able to talk?
If that is a practice , would one get angry,
Should this be told to you who is a mother,
And you know , in spite of penance , they do not have a daughter?

7.She hid the ball that I was playing and troubled me,
She hid it and took an oath she does not know,
I ask her equivalent butter for the ball and she,
Told that it is theft and hid its meaning , mother.

8.I did ask way for aunt’s house, that is true,
I asked way to the river bank, that is true,
I asked way to moon light court yard*, But she is,
Telling that is for kissing, Mother I do not know hat is in her mind?
*Court yard in Tamil is mutram and kiss in mutham
